Bowen Technique in cambridge

A relaxing and realigning therapy to relieve pain and stress from the body

Welcome to body symmetry!

My name is Clare Crouchman and I am a Bowen Technique Therapist based in the Cambridge area. I work from my treatment room in Histon, Cambridge which is easily accessible from Huntingdon, Newmarket and the surrounding villages.

I qualified in Bowen Therapy with the College of Bowen Studies, I am fully insured and a full member of the Bowen Therapy Professional Association.

Whether you are looking for support with an existing heath condition or want to reduce your day-to-day stress levels, my aim is to get you feeling happier, healthier and energised with specially-tailored Bowen treatments.

What is the

Bowen Technique?

The Bowen Technique is based on the work of the the Australian therapist Tom Bowen (1916-1982). It is a targeted neuro-muscular skeletal therapy which seeks to restore healthy spinal function by addressing imbalances associated with the pelvis, spine and skull and then integrate that with the rest of the body.

My particular approach to Bowen is inspired by the work of Graham Pennington and his assessment methods which enable me to target the primary dysfunction within the body. Graham's work has evolved from over 30 years of clinical practice. Tom Bowen's work is based on the original philosophy behind osteopathy and chiropractic but uses different tools.

The Bowen 'move' activates sensory receptors within the body's muscular skeletal system. It targets the tight muscles and their attachments to the skeletal system, releasing the tension of the muscles that cause misalignments of the spine. This allows for spinal realignment without forceful manipulations.

The Bowen Technique also works on the fascia of the body which is a bio-matrix that covers the muscles, organs and nerves.

Bowen is effective because it stimulates change in all these systems simultaneously; it releases muscular tension, corrects skeletal misalignments and activates a fascial release.

The Benefits of bowen therapy

pain relief

The Bowen Technique can be particularly helpful in managing many health conditions or injuries, especially constant or recurring ones that we might have come to accept over time as being a normal part of life.

stress relief

Bowen Therapy can induce a deep state of relaxation, which improves the effectiveness of the treatment. It works with the lymphatic system to relieve tension and aid circulation, increasing the flow of nutrients, oxygen and energy to all parts of the body, helping with the removal of toxins.

balance

The Bowen Technique can help to maintain your body's healthy balance and general wellbeing, relieving chronic or acute aches and pains and reducing the stresses and tensions that come with injury or from busy lifestyles.

Frequently asked questions

How many treatments will I need?

Everyone is different and the response to a Bowen session can be immediate or can require 3 - 6 sessions but the number of sessions is very much determined by:

  • The type of condition affecting the client
  • The severity of their condition
  • The length of time that they have had the condition
  • Lifestyle factors (diet, exercise, pressure of occupation and family)
  • Whether the condition is a single condition or whether the client suffers from multiple conditions.

After an initial course of treatment many people choose to check in monthly for a top-up, to maintain their general wellbeing or as a scheduled 'de-stress'. Other clients will get back in touch if they start to feel aches or pains, arranging treatments as and when they need them.

What are your fees?

Bowen Technique sessions for individuals last approximately 45 minutes to one hour and cost £50 per session.

Please note that if you want to cancel an appointment I require 24 hours’ notice; otherwise you will still need to pay for any sessions missed.

I accept payment by cash, card or bank transfer.

Can you diagnose my health problems?

Bowen Therapists cannot claim to diagnose or cure, but during a treatment we get 'feedback' as to which parts of the body are working well and which are not. Sometimes a session will highlight a specific area which is struggling or working hard to maintain your wellbeing; if I get this kind of reaction I'll discuss it with you at the end of the session.

What happens in a treatment? Do I need to undress?

No need to remove clothing as the treatment can be performed successfully through light clothing such as leggings or tracksuit bottoms. Please do not wear denim or other heavy fabrics.

During the treatment the client lies on a therapy couch and covered with a soft blanket to keep them warm.

Does the Bowen Technique hurt?

Bowen Technique can be adjusted to each individual client. There are no cracks or adjustments and you will find the session very relaxing. You might, however, find some areas feel sensitive to the touch if an area is really tight. As a therapist I will be aware of which areas of your body require a bit more care and attention.

What issues can the Bowen Technique treat?

The Bowen Technique frequently offers pain and emotional relief where other modalities have failed. Bowen Therapy is appropriate for newborn babies through to the elderly and infirm.
